About ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition

UAA has only had one concrete canoe travel all the way to regional competition in the last five years. The 2009 team produced the Legacy in hopes of breaking this static friction and built a network of contacts and resources to encourage a new tradition of participation in this event. Legacy performed far better than could ever have been hoped, successfully completing the journey down the Alcan with only a few minor cracks to show for it. Certainly nothing a little duct tape couldn't handle. Then, at the races, Legacy really shined, passing the swamp test with flying colors and surviving all five races. The Legacy team placed third in the races and couldn't be more proud of their efforts.

This year's team will have to keep up the momentum of this last year in order to hold the Legacy true to its name. The ground work has been established, so come help expand UAA's building competitive reputation. Meetings are held in the ANSEP building recitation rooms every Thursday at 4:00 pm. Contact the canoe captain, Walter Graham, for more information.

The competition rules are posted and can be found on the National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) website. Visit this site often to view "Significant Changes" that have been posted.

ASCE Steel Bridge
Last year's bridge design was a first in the history of this competition as the entire structure was required to be contained beneath the decking. Click here to check out our innovative design.

ASCE Technical Paper
Last year's technical paper centered around Engineering ethics. Rachel Kidwell came to our rescue by writing the piece on an abrupt deadline. She skillfully incorporating the mystique of Alaska and delivered a superb presentation at the conference.
