About ASCE Competition

Eighteen ASCE Student Conferences are held every spring, each hosted by an ASCE Student Organization belonging to the Conference.  Most include a business meeting, professional/technical presentations, competitions (surveying, technical paper presentations, concrete canoe, steel bridge), social activities and an awards banquet. Click here for a list of this years' conferences.

Every year, UAA makes a concerted effort to participate in each of these competition activities in addition to offering help to the hosting universities. By becoming involved in one of these activities, you become involved in an opportunity to learn new skills and apply skills you have already gained; an opportunity to practice team work and achieve satisfaction in the finished product, and most importantly, an opportunity to work with power tools.

The next Pacific Northwest conference will be hosted by Washingtion State University 22-24 April 2010. In 2011, UAA will be hosting the conference which means there is a great deal of work to be done. Follow the links to the right to learn more about how we performed in the last conference, what we are doing to be competitive in the next, and how you can help in this effort!

ASCE Steel Bridge
Last year's bridge design was a first in the history of this competition as the entire structure was required to be contained beneath the decking. Click here to check out our innovative design.

ASCE Concrete Canoe
Last year's canoe was a labor of love that resulted in Legacy. Click here for more information on the Concrete Canoe.

ASCE Technical Paper
Last year's technical paper centered around Engineering ethics. Rachel Kidwell came to our rescue by writing the piece on an abrupt deadline. She skillfully incorporating the mystique of Alaska and delivered a superb presentation at the conference.
